The Rainforest Understory (2)

And the butterflies certainly add color to the otherwise gloomy understory!

Some feel that the sulphur butterfly resembles a flower and so not noticed by predators.

And this green malachite butterfly is camouflaged by blending into the green background.

The glasswing butterfly camouflages itself not by looking like the background - but by allowing the background to be seen through it! As I was walking through a very dark section of rainforest in the Monteverde Preserve in Costa Rica, I saw a patch of light beaming through - and there was this fellow!

Hummingbirds also live in large numbers in the understory.

And another! A sugar-water feeder in the Monteverde Cloudforest Preserve in Costa Rica attracts dozens of species of hummingbirds!

But you can find them anywhere there are flowers, especially orange or red deep nectar-rich flowers.
