Caterpillars
Caterpillars come in all shapes and sizes! This one obviously will
not get eaten anytime soon!
This saddleback has two defenses - one is his "eye spots" - the end
with the big white eye-like spots is NOT his front end! In addition, while a
bird or lizard may try to figure this out by picking him up - they get stung
with his stinging hairs!
These caterpillars do not have stinging hairs, but are protected
because birds learn to avoid caterpillars with hair!.
It is felt that some caterpillars avoid being eaten by birds by
looking just like bird poop!
